He was a Newfoundlander
Born in St John’s on October 20, 1933. Our dad was an amazing husband and father.
Married to Janet for 62 years, until her death in November of 2023.
Together they raised 4 sons:
- Micheal(Beth)
- Paul(Wayne)
- Brad(Carloyn)
- Steven(Becky)
He is going to be missed by his grandchildren: Max, Colton, Ethan and Jack
And especially missed by his grandchildren Madeline and Jordan.
He was a Royal Banker for 37 years.
He was a volunteer Lion for more than 30 years. The community centre in Chippawa does not get built without him being the driving force. No disrespect to the other Lions who all worked very to ensure it’s completion, but it was Ron Maddigan who got it done.
He was a devoted Catholic, who some would argue was more religious than his brother who was a priest. He certainly was more pre-Vatican II.
In retirement, he was an avid golfer with Janet, and his son Brad.
But above all, he was a Newfoundlander, fiercely proud of his heritage. Proud to be a Canadian.
His great uncle, who was killed at Beaumont Hamel in the First World War.
His brother, who served in the Second World War.
His dad, who was very influential in having Newfoundland join Confederation.
There was not a lot of grey in Ron’s world. Everything was pretty much black and white. Don’t overthink it. Don’t hesitate. Get it done.
He was also the of one of the kindest, nicest individuals who ever lived. Everybody liked him. He treated everyone with respect. I like to think that he passed that on to his sons.
While he had been sick for some time, it was really only the last couple months where he stopped being himself. Up until then, he never stopped asking where you were from, because he was from Newfoundland.
We want to thank the staff at Hillside Pines for taking care of him for the last 18 months. They did a wonderful job and treated him like family.
Memorial donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation, or Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.
