BARRIER

, Joseph Arthur Norman, Bridgewater. After living 92 years, and being healthy and independent up until his death, Arthur Passed away peacefully at South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater, on September 18, 2014, after a brief illness. Born in Montreal, Que, on August 19, 1922, he was a son of the Late Fred and Melvina (Domey) Barriere. Arthur was a machinist at a young age, working at Canadian Vickers Ship Yard before WW11, and then enlisted into the Navy in January 1944. After serving duty he returned to Montreal and became a city policeman on December 6, 1949, and retired after a gunshot wound. Married in Rose Bay NS, on March 13, 1957 to Shirley Mary McLeod of South West Port Mouton, they settled in LaHave to start a family community grocery store. In the early 1960’s, the family returned to Montreal where Arthur returned to Canadian Vickers Ship Yard as a machinist. After many years, the tug of the sea and missing the home in LaHave, the family returned to Nova Scotia in September of 1976, where he continued to work and live until his death. Arthur was a long time member of Royal Canadian Legion Rouge River Branch #192 Arundel Que. Surviving are his wife Shirley May (McLeod) Barrier; sons Russell, Donald; daughter Ethel; sister Alma (Barrier) Hill, residing in Barns Stable North Devon, United Kingdom; grandchildren Douglas Barrier, twins Andrew and Anthony Barnett; great-grandchildren Alisza and Alanah Barnett. Arthur was predeceased by daughter Thelma Barnett; brothers Earl, Harvey, Lionel, Raymond; sister Lucile Barrier. The family sincerely thanks Dr. Nestel, Nurses, Health Care Professionals for their compassion and Father Jim MacDonald, who attended to dad in his last few days. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the R.A. Corkum Funeral Home, Wileville. There will be no visitation at the Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be held on October 11, 2014 from 1-4pm at 92 Haven Drive, Bridgewater. Interment will be held at a later date.
