It is with heavy hearts that we, the family of Captain Howard Garland, age 65, of Lake Mush-A-Mush, Sweetland, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia, announces his peaceful passing on Sept 21st, 2018 at the South Shore Regional Hospital after a 17 month challenge to defeat cancer. One of very few challenges in his life he did not win and as true to form, throughout it all, he did it his way. Howard was a great fire who burned bright and had his flame extinguished far too soon. Born in Pushthrough, Newfoundland April 11th, 1953, he was the son of Wilfred and Emily (Piercey) Garland. Howard moved to Nova Scotia at the tender age of 16 to pursue a career in the fishing industry, which became a 49 year career he was very proud of, becoming one of the youngest Captains in the industry at the time at the age of 26. He was employed with Ocean Choice International and co-captained the scallop factory freezer trawler, Atlantic Destiny with his brother Captain Kevin Garland.  Howard had a great fondness for Nova Scotia and the South Shore but never lost the love for his home Province of Newfoundland where he still maintained a summer home. He met his soul mate and future wife Claudette in 1980 through a small fender bender, they married in 1986 and had two sons, Tyler and Matthew, who were his pride and joy. Howard loved playing pool, spending time outside, hunting, fishing, boating, snowmobiling, time with friends at the cottage, soft water sailing and ice yacht sailing, which was particularly his passion and he was a devoted member of the Nova Ice Yacht Club. Participating in World, International, National and Provincial Ice Yacht races and placing first in several. He was always on the lookout for good ice and couldn’t wait for temperatures to drop so the waters would freeze over and he could go sailing in his Ice Yacht. Howard was not only a great Ice Yacht Racer and Sea Captain, he was a master of many things; he took great pride in building ice yachts and his cottage which he named "The Chalet". He cherished his 1979 Limited Edition Silver Anniversary Trans Am which was the very first new car he had ever bought and enjoyed to his last day. Left to mourn are his beloved wife of 32 years, Councillor Claudette Ellen Garland, sons Tyler (Cait) Garland, Bridgewater, Matthew Garland, Halifax, a daughter from a previous relationship, Roxanne (Glen) Freeman and their two daughters, (granddaughters), Jazmin and Jemma. His brother Captain Kevin (Anna) Garland, sisters Alyson (Tony) Moore, Caimbridge, Evelyn (Jack) Hollett, Lower Sackville, Anne (Russell) Aalders, Cole Harbour, Thelma (Garry) Rideout, Bridgewater, many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, his father and mother in-law, Donald and Marnie Zwicker, Newcombville. He was predeceased by his parents, Wilfred and Emily Garland, brothers Cyril Garland and John Garland, nephew Derek Garland and niece Samantha Garland. Cremation has taken place.  Thank you to Dr. Anne Chaisson, Dr. Debra Gowan, Dr. Joseph G.T. McNally, Dr. Catherine Annette Harris and the 4th floor medical team of nurses at the South Shore Regional Hospital for the excellent care he received during his stay. Special thank you to our life long friends David Whynott, Lisa Whynott, Eldon Hirtle and Christina Hirtle. Your time, caring and assistance throughout this journey will always be appreciated. Also, Meaghan Hatt and Ryan McCarthy. Thank you all so very much for your support. Howard loved the sea and was extremely proud to be a Captain, therefore we are honouring his life with the Captain Howard Garland Bursary Fund, for people seeking to upgrade their education to become fishing Captains with Ocean Choice International, Riverport N.S. Division through application to the fund. Memorial donations may be made to this fund through the LaHave River Credit Union in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia.   Arrangements are entrusted to the R.A. Corkum Funeral Home, Wileville, where Online condolences may be made by visiting www.corkumfuneralhome.ca.
